In order to successfully convey the message, I wanted to show different emotions and thoughts without explicitly stating them. The metaphor for this message involved falling and drowning in the ocean. To create the feeling of drowning emotionally and physically, I combined visual effects along with sea creatures that reflect one’s worst critiques of themselves. For example, “Loser” and “Coward” The ascension also features the reverse visual effects, but contains a brighter color palette as the character in the story rises on top of their negative feelings. The contrast of color palettes allowed for a greater emphasis on the eventual victory of the individual, with the brighter palette winning. A challenge when creating this video was animating a curved wave. The curved wave was achieved through extensive experimentation, with the best technique being creating a frame—by—frame guide and then using path masks over the wave texture I had created using Adobe Photoshop. This technique led to a smooth animation that fit the rest of the video.
